Sažetak

The article analyzes forms of work on oneself – „spiritual exercises“ in the sense of Pierre Hadot, or „techniques of the self“ in the sense of Michel Foucault – through which the ideal of philosophy as a way of life is realized in Petrarch’s letter The Ascent of Mont Ventoux (Familiares IV.1). In accordance with the tripartite structure of the study, it first examines the humanistic philosophy as a way of life, then Petrarch’s understanding of philosophy itself, and finally the concrete practices of reading and writing as prominent forms of spiritual exercises in this letter. The analysis shows that Petrarch, through the practices of reading and writing understood as means of self-transformation, reinterprets the ancient tradition of „care of the self“ in the spirit of Renaissance humanism. By focusing on these practices, the article seeks to deepen the understanding of Petrarch’s work and his philosophy.
