Sažetak
Competitiveness is a buzz word in everyday use by people in the business environment, public policy and the scientific community. The problem with the use of competitiveness arises when one scratches beneath its surface, because then it often has different meanings for different people. The main idea of the review article is to provide a critical review of the theoretical concept of competitiveness in the literature using the methodology of political economy and pointing out the theoretical shortcomings of each of the presented approaches. The historical evolution of the concept of competitiveness in the literature of business economics, economics and political economy is presented. Following on from the presented narrow and broad definitions of competitiveness, the paper presents four conceptual approaches to the competitiveness of contemporary economies, and presents quantitative and qualitative measures of the competitiveness of contemporary economies.
