HISTORICAL AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE BIOGRAPHICAL DATA AND THE PHILOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF KRČELIĆ’S FIRST LITERARY AND HISTORICAL TEXTBOOK FROM THE CONTINENTAL REGIONS OF CROATIA (1774)

Sažetak
After the introductory sections, which provide an insight into Krčelić’s origin,
education, literary works and the historical context of his work, this paper examines
the work printed in Latin under the title Scriptorum ex regno Sclavoniae a seculo
XIV. usque ad XVII. inclusive collectio and the related Latin manuscript under
the title Slavoniae in veteri quondam Panoniae Savia sitae scriptorum, cum notitia
praeliminari a s. Augustino Gazotti Ecclesiae Zagrabiensis episcopo incaminata
saeculo 14 series.
The aim of this paper is to date the autograph and attempt to determine the
template from which the later transcript, the only one preserved to this day, was
created. Therefore, any discrepancies at the level of the text’s content will be investigated,
as well as the differences in the orthographic, lexical and syntactic rules
of the standard Latin language. The second aim is to determine any potential differences
between the biographical data about the writers provided by Krčelić and
the information we have about these writers today — two hundred and fifty years
later — so that conclusions can be drawn about the quality of Krčelić’s work, which
was strongly challenged in the early twentieth century.
The autograph was dated by reviewing the available literature and Krčelić’s written correspondence. A comparison of the printed edition and the manuscript
revealed no differences in content (biographical or bibliographical) nor in lexical
or syntactic aspects, only orthographic and typographic differences. Furthermore,
it was found that Krčelić’s data related to the biographies of Croatian continental
writers is incomplete, and the information provided mostly corresponds with the
data available to us today. It was also confirmed that Krčelić’s bibliographical data
is generally very sparse, and it does not include all the significant authors. Nevertheless,
important works are mentioned, while lesser-known or thematically less
significant ones are omitted.
