Abstract

This paper analyzes the role of Varaždin newspapers in the context of World
War I, drawing on the corpus of local press from the period 1914–1918. Special focus
is placed on the newspapers Naše pravice and Hrvatsko pravo, analyzing their
propaganda function, editorial policy, content structure, and the way they shaped
public opinion in wartime circumstances. The paper shows how newspapers were
simultaneously a channel of information, a means of ideological mobilization, and
a platform for expressing local political views. Newspapers functioned as a tool for
mobilizing public opinion in conditions of censorship, paper shortages, and political
pressure. Variations in content indicate the transformation of political power
and social priorities of the local community within the broader Habsburg context.
