Sažetak
The time we spend at work or school often makes up the majority of our waking
hours in the day, but we still have a significant amount of time that we can
consider free. The positive effects of leisure time on the physical and mental
health of individuals, but also on the functioning of society as a whole, have been
demonstrated in numerous studies, despite the various problems that exist in this
area. Researchers studying leisure encounter many obstacles, from terminology,
to problems with the number and clarity of definitions of key terms, to problems
with the taxonomy of leisure activities and the methods used to measure them.
The aim of this paper is to give a brief overview of the problem of defining leisure
and classifying leisure activities and to discuss possible solutions. In addition, the
most common research methods in this area, which approach the definitions and
classifications of activities in different ways, are briefly presented and compared.
In the final part of the paper, possible solutions to the problem of conceptualising
leisure and suitable research approaches are considered.
