“Slavonian Ethnology” and Vitomir Belaj

Sažetak
The paper outlines the political and cultural landscape of Croatia in the 1980s, followed by a presentation of the academic and cultural infrastructure of Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem, and finally the intellectual environment surrounding Vitomir Belaj during that period. It has been established that, in the 1980s and early 1990s, Vitomir Belaj, largely through academic conferences in Slavonia held in honor of renowned Slavonian figures, contributed to completing the mosaic of the development of ethnological thought and the history of Croatian ethnology. At the turn of the millennium, his two papers on “Slavonian ethnology / Slavonians and ethnology” traced the development of ethnological and academic thought in Slavonia and identified the core of scholarly ethnological activity in the region at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century
