Sažetak

Based on preserved original photographs, archival material, and newspaper articles, the paper discusses photographic postcards produced by the Griesbach & Knaus company from Zagreb in the period between the First and Second World Wars, created from photographs taken by Ljudevit (1890–1946) and Đuro Griesbach (1911–1999). The text traces the development of postcard motifs across two socio-political systems of the first half of the 20th century, the dynamics of field photography throughout the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (and later the Independent State of Croatia), as well as the marketing and distribution of the postcards themselves. By comparing these with photographs and articles published in interwar illustrated magazines (Svijet, Obitelj, Ženski list) and professional journals (Hrvatski planinar, Foto revija), the study reconstructs the context in which the postcard motifs were created and highlights their connections with the then-flourishing mountain photography, tourism promotion, and the documentary role of photography in recording traditional costumes and cultural-historical monuments. In addition, the paper provides new biographical insights into the lives and work of the authors, as well as new findings about their activities immediately following the Second World War.
