Abstract

The essay analyses and compares the so-called city symphonies Berlin, die Sinfonie der Großstadt (D 1927, dir. Walt(h)er Ruttmann), Stramilano (I 1929, dir. Corrado D’Errico) and Zagreb u svjetlu velegrada (Zagreb in the Light of the Big City, YU 1934, dir. Oktavian Miletić). The beginning of the essay and the theoretical core are the reflections of the sociologist Georg Simmel on The Metropolis and Mental Life (1905). The aim of the essay is to examine whether and how the films mentioned correspond with the theoretical text and with each other, in order to prove that at the beginning of the twentieth century in Europe there existed a specific cinematic metropolitan narrative associated with New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), characteristic of both the European centres and the fringes of Europe. At the same time, the topic represents an early example of German, Italian and Croatian film relations
