Abstract

At first glance, Joseph Roth seems like a conservative thinker who held nothing but contempt for film as a new medium. However, in his early journalistic texts, Roth appears to be a friend of cinema. He recognizes the artistic quality of expressionist films such as "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" or "The Last Laugh", is thrilled by action movies and demonstrates remarkable insights into the inner workings and medial features of film.
His advocacy for capturing the material world in film anticipates ideas Kracauer later develops in his work "Theory of Film".
