Abstract

This paper examines provocative literary montage in Dadaist texts. This technique, frequently used by avant-gardists and significant and fruitful for the literature and art of the 20th century, was first tried out in short epic forms and in poetry. This shows that the short text form proved to be the best for this kind of literary experiment. After clarifying the notions of “montage” and “collage” and providing an overview of the brief history of the technique in literary and other media, the paper will focus on the provocative montages in Kurt Schwitters’ short prose forms (“Merz-Epik”). The paper also aims to prove that the technique mentioned contains both intertextual and intermedial elements.
