Sažetak

Following the end of the World War I and subsequent international negotiations, parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy—including the entire region of Istria (with the exception of part of the Municipality of Kastav)— were annexed by the Kingdom of Italy. These territories thus became part of a state facing growing political instability, social unrest, and the rise of the fascist movement. Within this context, the first post-war parliamentary elections were held in an attempt to establish stability and order within the state. A notable feature of these elections was the participation of the population from the newly annexed territories of the former Monarchy. This paper focuses specifically on the events surrounding the parliamentary elections in the spring of 1921, while also providing an overview of the political situation in the years leading up to the elections to offer a better understanding of the circumstances under which they took place.
