Abstract

This paper explores innovative approaches that encourage students to think critically, participate actively, and express themselves creatively, thereby contributing to the development of their functional literacy and motivation for reading. In this regard, the paper raises the issue of the importance of a modern approach to students, using required reading classes as an example. In the empirical part of the paper, research was conducted on a sample of fifth-grade students and their teachers in elementary schools in Tuzla Canton. The study analyzed whether teachers use modern teaching methods, whether they encourage student creativity, whether such methods facilitate achieving the goals of required reading classes, and which activities during classes students recognized as interesting and productive. It also explored what teachers should implement in their practice to stimulate student engagement and creativity. Data were collected using a survey technique and supported by method of description and online tool Google Forms
