Franjo Kuhač’s Music Terminology in Relation to Bogoslav Šulek’s Text »Postanak i narav glasbe« [The Origin and Nature of Music] (1875)

This case study presents, compares and analyzes the professional musical terminology by Franjo Kuhač as compiled in the two editions of his Katekizam glazbe [Catechism of Music] (1875; 1889), in relation to Bogoslav Šulek’s terminology in the text »Postanak i narav glasbe« [The Origin and Nature of Music] (Vienac, 1875). Franjo Kuhač laid the foundations of Croatian professional musical terminology, and Bogoslav Šulek, as the leading lexicographer of the post-Illyrian period, made an exceptional contribution to scientific terminology. The historical sources reveal they were aware of and relied on each other. The study provides insight into the specific linguistic corpus of both authors, with their musical terms arranged in a table in a way that allows direct comparison. The table (accompanied by commentary offering detailed explanations of terms and/or broader context for their use) reveals the degree of correspondence between the two authors’ terminologies, as well as their approaches to the terminological solutions. The selected corpus of Kuhač’s terms highlights the sources he relied on and the contributors who assisted him. In addition, the study analyzes the work of both authors from a historical perspective – in the context in which they operated. This includes the dominant lexicographical principles of their time, the socio-cultural context, and the already established linguistic corpus available to them at the time they were creating their respective terminologies.
