Croatian scientific and education cloud (HR-ZOO) - an important achievement on the way towards a common Croatian e-infrastructure

Sažetak
The needs of modern science and modern education today imply the availability of advanced and reliable e-infrastructure and digital services, which, as a principle, should be planned, built and used jointly in accordance with international, national and institutional strategies and plans for the development of research and education. For more than fifty years in Croatia there has been a tradition of such an approach to building a common e-infrastructure. An important achievement in this context is the building of the Croatian Scientific and Educational Cloud (abbreviated as HR-ZOO) as a new generation of common national e-infrastructure, that was made available to users in 2023. In the coming years, HR-ZOO will provide the necessary computing, storage and communication resources to all stakeholders in the academic and research community. After the basic facts related to the creation of HR-ZOO, the results of the project and possibilities of this new national e-infrastructure are presented in the paper: a network of new data centres, the ability to set up virtual data centres, the advanced computing possibilities thanks to multipurpose computing and storage resources, including supercomputer “Supek”, computer system for advanced cloud computing “Vrančić” and computer system «Štampar» for virtual data centers. HR-ZOO represents a significant national common resource necessary for the development of digital and open science and education and for strengthening the excellence and competitiveness of the Croatian research and higher educational areas and connecting them with the European and global ones.
