Sažetak
Children’s and young people’s leisure time is influenced by positive factors in society and is exposed to risks they may encounter. One of the ways of spending leisure time that has grown rapidly in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period is playing video games. The rapid development of the video game industry, social circumstances, and the increased occurrence of internalizing behavioural disorders have prompted scientists worldwide to question the effects of video games. The paper analyzes contemporary theoretical paradigms of leisure time, types and ways of spending leisure time in the virtual world of video games, their effects, and the role of family and school in the issue above. Examples of positive ways of using video games in the family and school environment provide a starting point for establishing the correct framework for positive video game-playing behaviour patterns. The paper draws on pedagogical science and contemporary empirical findings, while also offering a critical review of this topic for the Republic of Croatia.
