Abstract

In this paper, we follow the main moments in the history of infinite summations, from the early ideas formed in Greek antiquity, over first explicit considerations in the 14th and 15th centuries, the gradual systematisation of the theory from the mid-17th to mid-18th century, up to the final formalisation in the 1820s.
