Abstract

This paper analyses family names in the village of Brijesta and Dančanje on the Pelješac peninsula, which form a special natural, geographical and economic unit. The process of acquiring family names began in Brijest in the 15th century but it ended as late as in the 20th century due to the vast number of members of certain families and the frequent adoption of the family name of the house into which someone married. Family names are usually motivated by the personal names or nickname of the first bearer. Those motivated by the name of an occupation or the origin of the original bearers are significantly rarer.
