Abstract
The paper presents the history of the vehicles of the Mobile Library Service of Zagreb City Libraries, a mobile library that operates in two counties: the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County, analyzing their role, characteristics, and development through different periods. Special emphasis is placed on the planning, acquisition, upgrading, and equipping of vehicles that have enabled the continuous delivery of mobile library services over the years. Models and types of vehicles that have served as mobile libraries from the founding of the Mobile Library Service of Zagreb City Libraries to the present day are presented, with an emphasis on modifications and improvements, modernization of equipment and adaptation to user needs. The design and functionality of the vehicles have played a crucial role in ensuring accessibility of library collection, safety and comfort of users and employees in the vehicle, as well as in enhancing the efficiency of library services. The paper also discusses challenges related to vehicle maintenance and funding, as well as the importance of mobile libraries in providing access to library collections for residents of remote and rural areas. Furthermore, the social significance of the mobile library is emphasized as, through modern and well-equipped vehicles, it contributes to knowledge dissemination, reading promotion, cultural enrichment, and the creation of equal opportunities for all citizens of Zagreb and Zagreb County.
