Abstract
Timber roof structures have been in use from prehistoric times to the present day. This article provides a brief overview of significant historical timber structures and characteristic roof types found in heritage buildings across the city of Zagreb. For two timber roof structures of multi-residential buildings in Zagreb, four numerical models were developed to analyze the potential for cross-section optimization and the conversion of attic spaces into residential areas. For each of the four variants, material consumption was calculated by element type to provide a clearer understanding of the results. In recent years, technical solutions involving the replacement of constructions systems and materials in load-bearing timber roofs within historic buildings have become increasingly common. This article critically examines the justification for such interventions and explores the potential of timber roof structures.
