Sažetak

Acute prostatitis is a bacterial infection of the prostate that requires adequate empirical antimicrobial therapy. Clinically, it presents with a sudden onset of general symptoms such as high fever and fatigue, accompanied by pronounced lower urinary tract symptoms. The diagnosis is based on the clinical presentation and a digital rectal examination. Treatment involves prolonged antibiotic therapy, most commonly with fluoroquinolones, lasting 4 to 6 weeks to prevent recurrence and the development of chronic infection. In more severe cases, hospitalization with parenteral administration of antibiotics is indicated. Potential serious complications include sepsis and prostatic abscess, and in the long term, the development of chronic prostatitis. Acute prostatitis may also impair sexual function and quality of life, while sexually transmitted pathogens should be considered, especially in younger men.
