CURRICULUM STRUGGLES: REPRESENTATION OF RECENT KAJKAVIAN LITERATURE IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM

SUMMARY:
The topic of this paper is the transfer of knowledge of the Kajkavian dialect as a practical skill, knowledge and attitude towards dialectal literature from older generations to younger ones. The entire article focuses on the state of education, specifically in primary schools, regarding the nurturing and promotion of the Kajkavian dialect and the representation of recent Kajkavian literature in the school curriculum. The situation in practice is presented, not only by what is in the documents. The first part focuses on the great efforts of enthusiastic teachers who are trying to fill gaps in the curriculum through extracurricular activities. The challenges that rare enthusiasts in this area face are clearly presented. The activities of the Mala Kajkaviana extracurricular activities group, which has been operating in the Donja Stubica Elementary School for almost twenty-five years, are presented as an example of such work.
The most important document for school programs is the "curriculum" (“Kurikulum nastavnog predmeta Hrvatski jezik” - the Croatian Language Curriculum), so the paper analyzes the curriculum for primary schools from the first to the eighth grade in terms of the inclusion of dialectal content. A brief review is also presented about the efforts of the Kajkaviana association for greater inclusion of Kajkavian content in the curriculum. In this sense, the most interesting is the research of about eighty Croatian language and literature textbooks for primary schools from various publishers regarding the content of recent Kajkavian literature. The paper presents the results of this research in a clear overview.
The conclusion provides an answer to the question of the representation of recent Kajkavian literature in the school curriculum and textbooks for Croatian language and literature. One of the proposals is the compilation of a Kajkavian textbook that would offer high-quality and diverse texts in the Kajkavian dialect.
