Sažetak

The Croatian language began to be described in linguistic manuals in the early 17th century, but in Slavonia this activity appeared roughly 150 years later, when Slavonia became part of the Habsburg Monarchy. The first linguistic work in then-Slavonia is considered to be Svašta po malo iliti kratko složenje imenah i ričih u ilirski i njemački jezik (1761) by Blaž Tadijanović, while Matija Antun Reljković was the second Slavonian to publish a linguistic manual, titled Nova slavonska i nimačka gramatika (1767).
Ignjat Alojzije Brlić’s Grammatik der illyrischen Sprache (1833, 1842, 1850), written in German and in Gothic script, emerged later. Brlić (Brod na Savi—today Slavonski Brod—1795 – Cernik near Nova Gradiška, 1855) is also remembered as a controversial figure, as during the Croatian National Revival he advocated the idea that Croats should adopt Cyrillic; interestingly, however, he did not apply this practice in the case of his own linguistic manual. Brlić is known as an indispensable figure in the history of Croatian
linguistics, and his contribution to national philology is immense, although from today’s perspective it remains insufficiently recognized as such.
