Sažetak

The Croatian linguist and polyglot Bulcsú László (Čakovec, 1922 – Križevci, 2016),
professor of linguistics and information science at the Faculty of Humanities and Social
Sciences, University of Zagreb, Croatia, was well known for his word formation in the
Croatian language, including near 400 new words in electronics and programing. This paper analyzes, from a chemist’s point of view, his 66 uniquely Croatian names for chemical
elements (1997), which continues the work of the 19th century Croatian linguist
Bogoslav Šulek (1816-1895). László’s names for the elements are in accordance with
standard Croatian, but Croatian chemists and the general public could not accept them
for three reasons: (1) there is no connection between the elements’ names and their symbols,
(2) international names of the elements were accepted in Croatia long ago, (3) Croatian
(national) chemical nomenclature has to be harmonized as much as possible with
international (IUPAC) standards – which is obviously not the case with László’s names.
