Contribution of the Croatian-Slavonian Agricultural Society to the Development of Cattle Breeding from 1850 to 1894

Sažetak
This paper presents articles published in Gospodarski list from 1850 to 1894, up to the founding of the Croatian-Slavonian Veterinary Society (1893) and subsequently the Croatian Veterinary Society (1894). Over these 45 years, a total of 27 papers related to cattle breeding were published in the journal, either as professional articles written by experts or as advice provided by farmers of that time. No papers on this topic were published in the following years: 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1863, 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1868, 1869, 1871, 1872, 1873, 1874, 1877, 1878, 1881, 1883, 1889, 1890, and 1892. Among the analysed papers, general cattle breeding was addressed in five papers, while ten papers focused on cattle husbandry. Diseases of cattle were described in twelve papers, of which five dealt with infectious diseases. Of these five papers, four focused on rinderpest and one on foot-and-mouth disease. In the remaining papers, infertility was discussed in two papers, while difficult calving, colic, haematuria, udder diseases, and cattle diseases in general were each described in one paper. Although, from today’s perspective, these papers have limited scientific and professional value, they should be viewed in the context of the period in which they were created. Some terms were left in their original form to evoke archaic expressions,
while others were retained because their modern meanings could not be identified.
