Kalibar – From an Internal Newsletter to a Digital Edition

Abstract
Purpose. The article presents the development of Kalibar, the professional journal of the Library Association of Karlovac County (DKKŽ), from its launch in 2003 to its current electronic edition. It starts from the broader context of the role of professional associations in promoting librarianship and the importance of internal publications and journals as communication, informational, and identity tools within the professional community. Special emphasis is placed on the transformation of Kalibar from an internal publication intended for the members of the Association to a relevant professional journal with peer-reviewed articles, a double-blind review process, and clearly defined editorial standards.
Approach/Methodology/Design. The paper analyzes the activities of the Library Association of Karlovac County through its projects, activities, educational initiatives, and cooperation with the City Library "Ivan Goran Kovačić" in Karlovac, as well as the importance of local, institutional, and financial support in maintaining the continuity of the journal’s publication. Particular attention is given to the transition of Kalibar to an electronic edition in 2018, which reduced costs, increased content accessibility, and enabled faster exchange of professional information. Since 2023, the journal has received the status of a peer-reviewed publication and further professionalized its approach. Findings. Despite occasional technical and administrative challenges, Kalibar has become a recognizable project that connects librarians in Karlovac County and fosters professional collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the publication of professional and scientific papers. The growing interest from authors and readers confirms its role in the development and promotion of the library profession.
Originality/Value. Kalibar is gradually establishing itself as a relevant, high-quality, and permanent professional publication that contributes to the visibility of the library profession and strengthens the professional community at the local, regional, and national levels.
