Josipa Glembay – Čepinka who left a deep mark in the cultural development of Osijek

Sažetak
Purpose. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to efforts to record the development of culture in Osijek by recalling the cultural and historical role of Josipa Glembay, given
that she represented a key figure in the development of women's education and journalism in Croatia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The aim of the paper is to
highlight the significance of the work of the teacher, pedagogue, writer and humanitarian Josipa pl. Glembay and her influence on the development of culture and society as a
whole. In the paper, the author explored the activities, role and significance of Josipa Glembay through her contribution to the fields of pedagogy, literature, librarianship and social activities implemented through professional associations.
Approach/methodology/design. Data on the activities of Josipa Glembay were gathered from existing lexicographical, archival, and online sources. The work Zajednica (Community) was analyzed, which holds special significance for the Local History Collection of the Čepin Cultural Center Library, as it also contains a text by another local
author.
Findings. Using available data, the paper attempted to present Josipa Glembay's work and her significance in the cultural development of Osijek in a concise manner. From a
librarian's perspective, special emphasis is placed on the establishment of two reading rooms in Osijek and the publication of professional and literary works, and from a social perspective, the establishment of a foundation to enable the education of poor girls.
Social implications. Josipa Glembay was a pedagogue and writer, respected for the fact that her aspirations and persistent work left a deep mark on the cultural development of
Osijek. Her life was seemingly quiet and modest, but at the same time filled with dedicated work in the educational, literary, and social fields.
Originality/value. In addition to presenting the work of Josipa Glembay, known from previously published sources, the paper specifically analyzes her work Zajednica, which holds a significant place in the Local History Collection of the Čepin Cultural Center Library, and thus the environment in which she was born will receive a valuable source that can be a starting point for more detailed research and more comprehensive analyses of her work during the observed period, especially literary and pedagogical.
