Yield and grain quality of buckwheat under different sowing standards in the main and in the second crops

Sažetak
In Croatia and Slovenia, buckwheat is, when compared to other cereals,cultivated on relatively small areas. However, due to an increasing impact of climate change and the importance of biodiversity in agricultural production, there is an increasing need to introduce alternative crops into existing cropping systems. In 2025, a field study was conducted to evaluate the yield and seed quality of buckwheat under varying sowing times and plant densities. The experiment assessed the effects of variety, location, sowing method (main or second crop), sowing density, and their interactions on yield, hectoliter weight, 1000-grain weight, grain width, grain length and grain width-to-length ratio. Two Slovenian protected common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) varieties, Čebelica and Eva, were included in the trial. The study was conducted at two locations, Osijek (HAPIH – Center for Seed Production and Nursery) and Ljubljana (Agricultural Institute of Slovenia), using two sowing times and three sowing densities (250, 350 and 450 plants/m2), with three replications and standard agronomic practices. The results of the research on the realized yields of each variety depending on the location will contribute to the selection of optimal sowing methods for maximum utilization of the genetic potential of the variety most suitable for a specific location. The results of the study will also help address the problem of the selection of varieties and sowing methods to ensure the best possible yields and seed quality for each location.
