Revitalization of the school library

Abstract

Aim. The aim of the paper is to present the revitalization of the Library of the 3rd Gymnasium Osijek over the last thirty, and especially the last three years, in relation to the historical development of the library collection and the legal regulations and rules that prescribe the manner and conditions of operation of the school library.
Approach/methodology. The paper focuses on the historical development of the Library of the 3rd Gymnasium Osijek and the experience of the school librarian in revitalizing the school library. Revitalization is the process of consciously reviving the work of the school library in relation to the period before the Homeland War, when the library operated as a library and information center of the Center for Vocational Education "Braća Ribar" Osijek. After the division of the school library into three gymnasium libraries, there was a decline in terms of space and equipment. In the last three years, the library has been revitalized and fully meets the conditions for performing school library activities prescribed by the Standard for School Libraries (NN 61/23).
Results. The paper addresses the circumstances and difficulties of achieving the minimum requirements for performing school library activities prescribed by the Standard, with special emphasis on a library within a high school that does not have its own sources of funding. Over the past three years, the school librarian has managed to modernize and transform the library by implementing several projects so that it meets the requirements prescribed by the Standard.
Practical application. Working as an example of good practice can motivate librarians and heads of libraries in institutions without their own financial resources to find ways and means for their reorganization and modernization.
Originality/value. The value of the work lies in the fact that an analysis of the circumstances and difficulties in reaching the minimum conditions for performing the activities of school libraries was carried out. The result of the analysis and an example of good practice can serve as one of the models for the revitalization of libraries in the composition.
