Sažetak
Purpose. Knowledge is the foundation of the advancement of human society; however, if that knowledge lacks creativity, progress becomes limited. This principle applies to every human activity and profession, including librarianship. Without creative ideas, libraries and the library profession risk stagnation. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of creativity in academic libraries and the role they can play in fostering creativity among students through an applicable approach and concrete examples.
Approach. By reviewing professional and scientific literature dealing with creativity, the paper seeks to understand the essential nature of this phenomenon and explore whether and how its development can be encouraged. Along with general insights into creativity and its importance, the paper discusses relevant theoretical and practical perspectives focused on fostering creativity in students at higher education institutions, both in classrooms and within libraries. Special attention is given to academic libraries and the advantages they offer in this context.
Findings. In their pursuit of relevance in modern society, academic libraries are increasingly implementing a variety of creative activities that demonstrate their value as engaging, unique, and essential components of the institution. Through teaching activities conducted within them, as well as a range of educational and creatively designed cultural and popular-science events, these libraries are increasingly recognized as educational, creative, and inspiring centers within their institutions.
Originality. The originality of this paper lies in its contribution to the understanding of modern academic libraries as innovative institutions with the capacity to foster creativity among students. There are few works in Croatian professional literature that highlight the role of academic libraries as both educational and inspirational hubs. In addition to theoretical insights, the paper also presents a range of original ideas and creative initiatives from Croatian and international libraries.
