Abstract

Based on the data from student enrolment records that have been preserved in
the Archive of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Zagreb in continuum,
this paper offers a presentation of the students from the Modruš–Rijeka County at the
Faculty of Philosophy of the Royal University of Franz Joseph I in Zagreb from the
establishment of the modern university in Zagreb in 1874 to the beginning of World
War I. The group in question consists of 150 students enrolled at the Faculty of Philosophy
of the University of Zagreb during that period and born in and/or originated
from the Modruš–Rijeka County. An analysis of the social, religious, and linguistic
structures; prior education; duration of study; completion of studies; and some other
characteristics of their studies in Zagreb has been conducted using quantitative and
qualitative methods. In this way, a picture of the then contemporary student youth from
the Modruš–Rijeka County, which represented the basis of the future educational elite
from that area, is presented.
