Abstract

Lexicon Latinum Interpretatione Illyrica, Germanica, et Hungarica locuples, written
by Croatian Jesuit Andrija Jambrešić and coauthored by Franjo Sušnik, was published
in 1742 in Zagreb, Croatia. It was aimed at students of various affiliation in the Austro-
Hungarian Empire. Beside classical and modern Latin, the Lexicon presents many
items in science, especially botany, zoology, astronomy, and geography. Analyzing the
terms connected with chemistry, mostly the names of minerals, elements and compounds,
the author shows that the Lexicon presents a very narrow view in this field. This points to the fact that in the 18th century teaching in Croatia was not focused on chemistry,
at that time a quite exotic science.
