Sažetak

The paper presents the chronological development of Volosko from the first mention of the town in the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. By examining the
available sources and literature, the paper argues that the location of Volosko and its
orientation towards the sea has determined its further development and significance for
the Kvarner region. The paper presents the development of the town, which is largely
based on its orientation towards the sea – a tradition established in Volosko in its medieval beginnings. With the development of fishery and subsequently maritime trade,
the economic importance of the town grew accompanied by a political rise during the
19th century, especially during the period of the Croatian national revival. The political
influence of Volosko has furthermore been established by the significance of the development of the Volosko–Opatija municipality, which will continue to leave its mark on the
Kvarner region in the following periods. Finally, the paper presents the educational and
cultural development of Volosko, which further argues for the economic, political and
cultural significance of the town.
