Sažetak
Infectious diseases (cholera, typhoid, diphtheria, scarlet fever, measles, whooping cough, tuberculosis) are the scourge of demography in all times and on all continents. Epidemics of these diseases were a constant threat on the soil of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia, but also in the city of Osijek. The poor state of health among the population indicated the need to promote social medicine and disease prevention. In the battle to suppress and spread large epidemics of infectious diseases, numerous orders of the National Government in Zagreb and laws were followed, which regulated the health service in cities and counties led by city and county doctors. The health condition regarding infectious diseases in Osijek during the 19th and early 20th centuries was not much better, because there was no city water supply. Relatively shallow wells were located in the yards of houses near the pits into which collected garbage and various animal remains were thrown. The liquid of those pits was a real breeding ground for microorganisms full of bacteria (bacilli) of every kind and it penetrated through the earth, mixing with well water, directly affecting infectious diseases, which had far-reaching consequences on demography, but also on other economic factors. Therefore, these diseases continued to be the bane of demographic growth in Osijek until the end of the 20s of the 20th century, when the general situation of the danger of infectious diseases affected the final solution of the water supply in the city.
