Sažetak

This article explores in more detail the reception of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy in the work of Marijan Tkalčić along two content lines and two methodological lines. The first content line is related to Marijan Tkalčić’s earlier works and only partial references to Kant during the period when he was mainly engaged in pedagogical theory and worked as a high school teacher. His doctoral dissertation stands out in that period, in which, given the topic (causality and teleology), Kant becomes an indispensable interlocutor. The second is related to the period after the end of World War II, when Tkalčić began working at higher education institutions and engaged in philosophy more studiously. During that period, there was a more direct philosophical reference to Kant’s intellectual contributions, culminating in his ethical and aesthetic contributions. From a methodological perspective, the aforementioned reception can be investigated in two ways, that is, it is reflected on two levels. The first is related to the occasional, erudite citation of Kant in the context of building his own position, with Kant being mostly the subject of criticism. This approach will characterize most of Tkalčić’s dealings with Kant and culminate in the use of Kant to criticize idealism and existentialism in the process of building Marxist philosophy, especially his original interpretations of that philosophy in the direction of the philosophy of creativity. The second, perhaps more interesting, is the one in which Tkalčić enters into a direct dialogue with Kant, trying to interpret him, point to his intellectual potential and offer an interpretation. Although such a path is shyly glimpsed in the writing of his doctoral dissertation, such a dialogue with Kant will only come to life in the later period of his work, and especially towards the end of his life. Namely, already as a mature professor of philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, he studiously reads and interprets Kant, certainly also due to the needs of teaching at the faculty, which results in separate reviews and essays on Kant’s philosophy. Ultimately, it is concluded that Tkalčić’s legacy in this sense is exceptional and that his oeuvre represents an important part of contemporary Croatian philosophical history, not only in a scientific but also in an educational sense.
