Majurec in the 18th and 19th century: family size – family type – family cycle

Sažetak
TThe paper provides an outline of the research conducted on families of the village of Majurec near Križevci in the late 18th and first half of the 19th century. In addition to Majurec, four other villages of the Križevci parish were researched for comparison. Majurec attracts attention because the pattern of a large extended family is repeated in the village at nine house numbers, with a higher number of married couples, conclusion of marriage before the age of twenty for both sexes, and pronounced patrilineality, i.e. close kinship between members of the large family, and especially with the householder (head of the house). In the homes of Majurec, there are almost no unrelated family members, the number of widows and widowers is small, and there are no stepchildren at all. For better presentation of the data, the reference year 1850 was chosen, and numerical analyses are mainly based on the numbers found in that year. Located, like the whole of Croatia, south of the “Hajnal line”, the village of Majurec is also on the border of the still-maintained Military Border, and the maintenance of these large families, which resemble family village cooperatives, can be partly explained by the influence of the proximity of the border. In the Military Border, a military organization in force also interferes with family relations and is prone to such polycentric large families. However, large extended families in the Podkalnik area also appear, although not exclusively, in other villages of the Križevci parish, as well as in other parishes. These are indeed large families with more than 30 members (even up to 50), and with more than five married men in the house. According to the first data based on the five villages studied, the number of large extended families is less than half of small extended families and basic (nuclear) families. However, significantly more than half of the inhabitants of the Križevci village area live in them.
