Sažetak
Counties and captaincies were the basic territorial and administrative
units in the extra-urban area of the Dubrovnik Commune (later the Republic of Dubrovnik / Ragusa) from the Middle Ages until its fall in 1808. The construction of count’s palaces as the administrative headquarters of local counts was closely connected with the territorial expansion and the establishment of Dubrovnik’s authority. The article reconstructs and analyses four inscriptions on the Count’s Palace in Slano and one inscription on the Count’s Palace on the Island of Šipan. Two inscriptions in Slano consist of only two letters, MP and ML, and it can be assumed that they are the initials of counts from the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The third inscription is a four-line graffiti dated
January 12, 1447. With it, the count sought to immortalize the first day of his service in the newly completed palace. It refers to Dragoje Rafael Goçe (1405-1477), the first count of Slano to reside at the court. The fourth inscription is written in carmine red on the entrance door. It is illegible today, having been partly washed away by rain and partly damaged during the last renovation. It is written in Gothic letters in three lines, of which the year 1447 is partially visible at the beginning of the text. The very fact that this is the year when the Palace was completed indicates that these are almost certainly the names of
the nobles who were the foremen of the Palace’s construction (officiales). This assumption is also confirmed by the fifth, three-line inscription above the entrance door of the Count’s Palace on the island of Šipan, where, after the year of completion (1450), the names of three officials are inscribed. It can be concluded that stating the names of the three foremen at the entrance represented a final act and a mark of respect for those who oversaw the construction. Given that the entrance doors of the palaces in Pridvorje (around 1435) and Trstenica (1448) have been demolished, we can only assume that similar inscriptions were also present there. Palaces built in the 16th century no longer
have the names of officials inscribed; instead, the date of completion is sometimes indicated. Thus, the palace on Lastovo was completed in August 1571, and the one in Babino Polje on the island of Mljet in 1554.
