Abstract

The Second Vatican Council once again placed the Word of God at the very heart of the Church’s life. What kind of hermeneutics of the Word of God is called for? Without abandoning the value of the historical-critical method, it is necessary to recover the patristic approach to exegesis. It is to Henri de Lubac’s credit that he brought patristic and medieval theological thought into dialogue with the present, seeking within it answers to contemporary questions. The patristic and medieval spiritual interpretation of Scripture is one of the most compelling phenomena of Christian thought, and one that can still make its contribution to the healing and growth of the person today. The spiritual inter-pretation of Sacred Scripture does this to the extent that it communicates a theological approach to history that does not stop at the search for historical truth, but rather seeks to penetrate to the truth of history; it teaches that life, no less than Scripture, stands in need of exegesis in the light of Christ, and it frees us from various dualistic readings.
