Sažetak
The paper examines the first decade of the Požega City Theatre as a cultural institution. It was established on March 10, 1995. This formative period was crucial in solidifying the founders’ recognition of the theatre’s cultural significance to the city. A pivotal instrument in this development was the annual publication "Kazališne novine". It not only documented each season’s efforts but also critically engaged with the theatre’s policies. Contributions came from Croatian theatre experts and local professionals. The theatre’s repertoire was characterized by guest performances of high-quality productions. These covered various theatrical expressions and aesthetics. This approach played a strategic role in cultivating an informed and discerning audience. The theatre also focused on dramatizations of works by local authors such as Josip Eugen Tomić, Srđan Tucić, and Antun Kanižlić. Through this, it reaffirmed its role in preserving and renewing local cultural identity. Enthusiastic local theatre amateurs were nurtured in the Little Theatre School and the High School Theatre Group. Their collaboration with leading Croatian theatre professionals – directors, pedagogues, dramaturgs, set designers, and costume designers – was vital in establishing a professional ensemble. This synergy positioned the Požega City Theatre as a significant player in the Croatian theatre landscape through successful touring performances.
