Value Vocabulary of Marulić’s Judith

Sažetak
The article analyzes the value vocabulary of Marulić’s epic poem Judith (1501), which deals with the Old Testament Book of Judith. The analysis is based on a three-part classification of value-connoted lexemes: a) elementary value lexemes that have no other meanings than that of value; b) lexemes that denote assumed values of the culture to which the analyzed text belongs; c) other value-connoted lexemes. These are the most important results of the axiological analysis of the vocabulary of Marulić’s Judith: – In the group of elementary value lexemes, positive connotations predominate, and lexemes denoting the act of valuation itself are particularly frequent. Around a quarter of all lexemes in this group appear in relatively short author’s prose sections of the text: in the dedication, in the two introductory sections and in accompanying footnotes to the basic epic text. – The group of value lexemes, which refer to assumed intersubjective/cultural values, is also dominated by words with positive connotations, but the ratio of values and anti-values, under which they are subsumed, is balanced. The most important (anti-)values of the Marulić’s text also appear in the Book of Judith of the Vulgate, only the ratios of the lexemes of the individual values differ. – In the group of other value-connoted words, similarities between the Latin prose biblical text and the Croatian epic poem can also be found in relatively numerous lexemes from the two narratively and logically related semantic fields ‘war violence’ and ‘fear’. In contrast, Marulić’s text lacks lexemes from the field of ‘revenge’, which occur in the Old Testament story.
