Sažetak
Tesla delivered lectures on his inventions,
mainly on alternating currents, in
London and Paris in 1892. Later in Zagreb
he expressed his opinion about electrical
illumination of the city. He gave useful advice,
suggesting the way in which it should
be done and offering his assistance. In his
speech in 1893, the rector of the Polytechnic
in Graz, Albert von Ettingshausen pointed
out Tesla’s achievements and stressed that
the Polytechnic in Graz felt proud of Tesla,
their former student. These were probably
the incentives that prompted the next year,
1894, the Class for Mathematical and Natural
Sciences of the Yugoslav Academy of
Sciences and Arts (today the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts) in Zagreb to propose
Tesla as a corresponding member of the
Academy. It seems that some members of the
Academy opposed this, and so the vote for
Tesla’s election at the General and Electoral
Assembly in December 1894 did not take
place. In 1895 the Class for Mathematical
and Natural Sciences proposed Tesla again
as a corresponding member, and this time
the proposal came before the Academy’s
General and Electoral Assembly held in December
of the same year, but the voting was
postponed. It seems that the opposition of
some members against the election of Tesla
as a corresponding member made the Class
for Mathematical and Natural Sciences
change their proposal and nominate Tesla
for honorary membership in the Academy.
This proposal seems to have met with no opposition,
and when it came before the General
and Electoral Assembly on December
17, 1896, it was accepted by a large majority
of votes. The election of Tesla as an honorary
member of the Academy was covered by
a special article in the Zagreb daily paper
Obzor on December 24, 1896.
