Sažetak
This paper aims to present the state's approach to the railway workers' strike that took place in April 1920. Using previously unpublished sources from the Croatian State Archives and secondary literature, the paper will employ the methods of "history from above" to analyze the reactions of the highest state authorities to the strike, while "history from below" will be used to explain how the actual situation on the ground influenced state decisions and their stance
toward the strikers. The goal of this approach is not only to illustrate the beginning, development, and decline of the strike, as well as its long-term impact on the state's relationship with railway workers and their social position after the strike ended, but also to highlight specific state mechanisms used to suppress the strike and assess the (in)effectiveness of these mechanisms.
