Sažetak

Following a brief overview of Slovenian–Croatian bilingual lexicography, the paper presents the development of a specific type of bilingual Slovenian–Croatian dictionary to be published on the Termania dictionary portal. The dictionary is being compiled with the participation of students enrolled in the Croatian Language Lectorate course at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor. Lexicographic work is employed as an innovative method of teaching and learning a foreign language which, provided an appropriate theoretical foundation and sufficient prior knowledge, involves students in all stages of compiling the planned dictionary. In addition, students must first become familiar with lexicographic procedures and principles, relevant linguistic manuals and resources, and acquire the skills necessary to work with language technology tools that facilitate the process of dictionary compilation in the contemporary context. In the planned bilingual growing dictionary, taking into account the shortcomings of existing digitized Slovenian–Croatian dictionaries and competition from machine translation systems, a range of relevant information will be provided, such as current usage examples, frequent collocations, established phraseological units, and links to other relevant language resources. This will enable direct access to derived forms, i.e. the grammatical elaboration of entries, as well as etymological and phraseological explanations. This concept significantly surpasses the basic listing of Slovenian headwords and their Croatian translation equivalents, which is still most commonly found in the analysed online dictionaries (e.g. Dumka 2021; Jurančič 1991b, 2024). On the one hand, this increases the usefulness of the dictionary; on the other hand, through its concept, the dictionary aligns itself with contemporary language portals that, by exploiting the advantages of digital media, are designed to better meet users’ needs in today’s world.
