Sažetak
The paper investigates the collection of twenty gems from the glyptic collection
of the J.J. Winckelmann Antiquities Museum, selected for a possible presence of
motifs associated with the sphere of Dionysus. A historical reconstruction of the
development of collections (Zandonati, Sartorio, Oblasser) and the Trieste private
collections context, is followed by a synthetic framework of Dionysian iconography.
It presents an analytical catalogue of the carvings, with an overview of materials,
state of preservation, comparisons and dating proposals. The items include Dionysus
standing, holding thyrsus and cantharus or grapes, satyrs in musical or pastoral
poses, maenads and scenes of sacrifice on altars or Priapic symbols. The iconographic
identification is based on systematic comparisons with glyptic collections
and on stylistic criteria, particularly those defined by Marianne Maaskant-Kleibrink.
Most of the gems date from the period between the first century BC and the third
century AD. The paper highlights the diversity and continuity of Dionysian themes
in glyptics and contributes to the knowledge and valorisation of Trieste’s heritage.
