BETWEEN STIGMA AND ORNAMENT. THE BODY AS A DOCUMENT: IDENTITY AND DISCIPLINE IN ISTRIA IN THE EARLY MODERN PERIOD

Sažetak
The paper examines the role of the body as a signifying surface in Istria and the
northern Adriatic between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, looking at three
main forms of its markers: natural signs (those present from birth), imprinted signs
(particularly corporal punishment and branding), and personally chosen signs
(clothing, ornaments, hairstyles). Drawing on a wide array of sources – legal, notarial,
ecclesiastical – the paper reconstructs practices and discourses that saw
the body as an instrument of social control, a means of identification, and a space
for personal presentation. In a contact region like Istria, intersected by political,
linguistic, and cultural borders, the clothed and marked body turns into a field of
negotiation between the individual, the community, and power. The paper therefore
aims to restore the historical centrality of the body as a “living document” and
to open new research perspectives between cultural history, anthropology, and
the history of law.
