Abstract

The research in the toponymy of the Momiano/Momjan area has not yet attracted
scholarly attention, hence this paper is aimed at filling this gap and providing as
exhaustive a picture as possible of a past that ceased to exist, but whose traces
survive in the local names associated with settlements, various geographical entities
and watercourses. These toponyms allow for a reconstruction of the history
of human settlements in this area, an expansion of knowledge of the environment
and answers to why and how people acted over the centuries, even in relation to
other people. The toponymy of the Momiano/Momjan area therefore represents a
genuine “archaeology of words”, a verbal excavation that provides important contributions
to the reading of the landscape. It helps to keep the relationship with the
territory alive and protects places and their names from the corrosive perils and
external attempts at change, which may or may not be intentional.
