Sažetak

Antun Marcello de Petris, born in Cherso/Cres probably around 1450, was a leading
figure in the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and the Diocese of Istria between the
late fifteenth and the early sixteenth centuries. Following the completion of theological
studies, he was awarded the titles of baccalaureate and the teacher of the Order.
In 1496, he was appointed Provincial Minister of the Franciscan Province of St Jerome
in Dalmatia and Istria, the same duty he performed in the Province of St Anthony of
Padua. After the division of the Order, in 1517 he became the first Minister General of
the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. Having completed the three-year Minister General
term, he was appointed titular Archbishop of Patras, and later Bishop of Cittanova/
Novigrad in Istria. He also carried out intense diplomatic activity as an advocate
for the Cherso/Cres community in the Venetian Senate, where he successfully fought
for the fortification of the city. His cultural and political authority was confirmed by
the Statute of Cherso/Cres and by the praise by his great-nephew Frane Petrić in the
dialogue Il Contarino, as well as by some later historical positions. He died in Cherso/
Cres in September 1526 and was buried in the church of St Francis.
