Sažetak
Joseph Roth’s years in interwar Berlin mark a specific phase in the author’s work. This phase is directly linked to the centre of the Weimar Republic, a city oscillating between the extremes of optimism and disillusionment. This paper argues that Roth captures these extremes in both his journalistic and fictional works, employing specific literary techniques in which diagnosis and prognostication merge. To grasp the particular significance of Roth’s writing techniques, the paper first outlines the object of study: interwar Berlin. The discussion then turns to examining not only the journalistic portrayal of the metropolis, using “Berliner Bilderbuch” (“Berlin Picture Book”) (1926) as an example, but also the novella "Das reiche Haus gegenüber" ("The Rich House Across the Street") (1928), showing how Berlin of this era of extremes, under the magnifying glass of the novella’s formal condensation, is reduced to a place of unfulfilled hopes. The third and concluding section summarizes the current state of research and identifies
areas for further study.
