Sažetak
During the 18th century, the eastern Croatian multiple borderland was shaped by dynamic military, political, social, economic, and cultural influences, along with the diverse communication networks and the spread of innovations across multiple spheres of life. Ongoing military conflicts and devastations intensified the demand for new spatial expertise, which was largely introduced by foreign specialists, facilitating a more systematic understanding of the region. The Habsburg–Ottoman wars and the demands of the military and civil authorities attracted some of the most prominent cartographic experts from Central Europe. This paper aims to re-examine their role, particularly within the work of the Boundary Commission established after the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699. By employing a qualitative comparative analysis of orography, hydrography, and settlements in the central part of the Sava - Drava interfluve, this study evaluates the contribution of military cartographers to the development of a geo-visual understanding of the region. The topographic map segments selected for analysis were determined by whether the depicted areas were encompassed by the military survey of the Slavonian Military Frontier (e.g. Brod on the Sava) or lay beyond the border zone and thus lacked systematic field-based measurements (the Požega Basin).
