The Building of a Cult Through a Myth: The Case of St. James the Elder

Saint James the Greater, one of the Twelve Apostles, is the patron saint of Galicia, pilgrims, and all of the Kingdom of Spain. This paper attempts to trace the development of the cult of Saint James the Greater as James of Compostela in medieval Galicia, from Scripture and the mistranslation of Greek hagiographical sources to later legends written in the Middle Ages in Western Europe. Additionally, the paper presents and compares the martyrologies of various authors: thus, the works of Ado of Vienne, Usuard, and Florus of Lyon are included in the study. It is in the works of these authors that the first mention that the tomb and relics of Saint James are located in Galicia is found. In any case, this study represents an effort to compile all these rather scattered data in one place.
