What Is Stylization?

Abstract

Like the word style, to which it owes its origin, the word stylization is also ambiguous, but while the ambiguity of the former, even in terminological uses, is often registered and thematized, the meanings of the latter, even in stylistic contexts, often remain only implicit. The aim of this paper is to fixate the meanings of the word stylization in the context of discourse on style and stylistic features, primarily verbal discourse, based on dictionary entries and selected excerpts from stylistic and literary studies literature,
but also taking into account the uses of the word in other areas, in discourses concerning (products of) artistic, but also other human activities. The key concept of stylization is that from the works of Mikhail Bakhtin, which is called interdiscursive, and by elaborating on aspects of its connection with the previously presented concepts (shaping and embellishment, set of stylistic features, stylistic figure, artificiality, pejorative artificiality, reduction), a definition of stylization is given, modernized in terms and postulates of
discourse theory, and then the relationship between the concepts of pastiche and interdiscursive stylization is considered, and the valorization aspects of the latter are commented on.
